The Medical Advocate position is primarily responsible for the coordination of the agency’s hospital-based Medical Advocacy Project, working on behalf of victims of domestic and sexual violence in collaboration with interdisciplinary staff at health care facilities in York County. The Medical Advocate provides trauma-informed support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence and sexual violence who seek treatment within any York County health care system. The Medical Advocate provides training on the intersection of sexual and domestic violence and health care to health care providers, as well as technical assistance and recommendations on best practice policies and procedures. Serves on a range of community committees and task forces representing the health care needs of domestic and sexual violence victims.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitates collaboration between health care providers, team members, and outside agencies serving victims of domestic violence and sexual violence.
- Coordinates and provides in-service trainings and consultation to health care providers on domestic violence and sexual violence issues.
- Accepts referrals from health care providers. Interviews patients to determine appropriate services are initiated and to obtain patient’s consent to receive project services, direct services, and referrals.
- Provides on-call support, options, safety planning, referrals, and advocacy to victims of sexual and domestic violence at WellSpan York, UPMC-Pinnacle Memorial, and Hanover Hospitals in York County. This response is in a remote format.
- Maintains current, thorough knowledge of issues pertaining to domestic and sexual violence, including their intersections with other forms of oppression and the need for empowerment-based victim-centered advocacy.
- Maintains and submits statistical information, reports, records of intervention and activities.
- Develops and distributes domestic violence and sexual violence materials to patients and healthcare providers.
- Assists as needed with accomplishing the goals and objectives of the Community Education department via other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or at least three years of work experience in the field of health care or human services. Strong preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience working with the health care field within York County.
Must complete the mandatory PCADV/PCAR domestic violence/sexual assault counselor/advocate training within 90 days of hire; preference will be given to those applicants who have already completed the training, and/or have demonstrated experience working with victims of domestic violence.

- Ability to work both independently and in a team; willingness to take initiative and ownership of performance outcomes; excellent organizational skills; ability to work within flexible time frames.
- Transportation within York County will be frequently needed, as will flexibility to work some evening and weekends.
