Healing Roots Toolkit: Culture and Connection to End Domestic Violence

Throughout Pennsylvania, there is a large Latine community (9% of the population). Within the Latine community, there are multitudes differences in region, The companion toolkit, titled Culture and Connection to End Domestic Violence or Raíces Que Sanan: Cultura y Conexión Contra la Violencia Doméstica, offers the process behind the campaign and practical tools: tips for authentic community engagement, guidance for culturally responsive outreach, and step-by-step support to build community-centered campaigns.

The release coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15–Oct 15), honoring cultural roots and community strength.

Why this Toolkit?

We recognize that many organizations in Pennsylvania work with Latino/e communities. Some are Latine-led, while others are not. This toolkit is for members who want to create campaigns grounded in listening, understanding, and relationship-building. It’s for those who believe meaningful change happens when we center trust, cultural values, and lived experiences.

Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the broader context: there are over 60 million Latinos in the U.S. (18.9% of the population). In Pennsylvania alone, Latines make up 9% of the population, bringing with them diverse histories across region, generation, race, gender, language, and immigration story. While this toolkit cannot capture every voice, it dives deep into domestic violence prevention through the lens of Pennsylvania’s Latine communities.
This toolkit includes guidance on:
  • Cultural considerations
  • Language and tone
  • Community and family
  • Understandings & misunderstandings of domestic violence
  • Communication strategies
  • Engaging content
At its heart, this toolkit is not just a product—it’s an invitation. To slow down, to listen deeply, and to build campaigns that reflect the wisdom and realities of the communities we serve.

Choose the Path That’s Right for You

This campaign was designed to be adaptable. Each organization can select the language that resonates most deeply with the people they serve without losing alignment to the core message.
This campaign is meant to breathe with your community. As Intercambios reminds us: “Add your own sazón: adapt it, remix it, and let it reflect the voices you serve.” This isn’t a formula to replicate. It’s a foundation to build upon and an invitation to approach this work with creativity, humility, and deep community connection.
That’s why we invite you to choose the journey that is best for your organization.
  • At the top, you can select the wording that best reflects how your community understands violence:
El legado · El ciclo · El patrón
  • At the bottom, you can shape the healing message by choosing the phrase that resonates most with your audience:
Con amor · Con respeto · Sin juicio
What matters most is that the language feels authentic and rooted in the community you serve.

Learn About the Process

This project began with a simple but critical question: How do we talk about domestic violence prevention in a way that truly connects with community?

Instead of jumping straight into a campaign, we began by listening—listening to cultural leaders, to lived experiences, and to the values that shape Latine culture. That relational process became the foundation of both the campaign and this toolkit.

May this resource serve as a bridge, connecting you to community wisdom, cultural values, and the power of relationships. Bienvenides a este camino. Let’s walk it together.
