Starting Salary/Hourly Rate: $16.00/hour
The Crisis Counselor and Advocate provides services to adult and child survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual violence in the Safe House. This position will advocate at the Berks County Community System level for survivors’ needs, support, respect, and grant equality and fairness to all individuals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (includes but is not limited to the following):
- Provide emotional support to individuals coming from violent homes.
- Provide individual supportive counseling to victims residing in the Safe House.
- Interact positively with victims residing in Safe House.
- Assist victims in developing positive interactions with the client’s children (if applicable).
- Conduct intake interviews with individuals seeking Safe House services.
- Process crisis hotline telephone calls and text messages from victims of domestic/sexual violence.
- Document daily activities and maintain record-keeping relevant to program services.
- Provide general clerical & housekeeping duties.
- Show new residents their rooms
- Inspect rooms for cleanliness
- Attend and participate in Safe House meetings and staff meetings.
- All other duties as determined by the departmental supervisor.

Educational & Experience Requirements:
- Qualified candidates with bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills will be given preference in the interview process and is strongly preferred for all positions working in Residential Services
- Ability to communicate effectively and handle crisis situations
- Ability to deal effectively with victims, their children & co-workers
Employment Experience (amount and kind)
- 1 to 3 years experience working with victims of trauma required
Education (general level required or specific courses)
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent degree required
Essential Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and may infrequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
- Completion of a background check request, FBI, State Police, and Child Abuse Clearances obtained prior to employment through agency vendor
- Completion of 66-hour Sexual and Domestic Violence Training provided by agency
