POSITION SUMMARY

The Accounting Specialist supports the Controller by recording general ledger transactions, reconciling bank statements and general ledger accounts, and performing monthly and annual closing procedures in an accurate, timely manner and using the accrual basis of accounting. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Prepares monthly journal entries.
  2. Performs monthly bank and general ledger accounts reconciliations.
  3. Runs monthly allocations.
  4. Maintains the fixed asset schedule, records depreciation, and performs annual inventory with appropriate staff.
  5. Prepares supporting schedules.
  6. Assists with preparation of annual audit and 990 as needed. 
  7. Prepares and submits sales tax filings, keeps all registrations (eTides / PA Dept of Revenue), small games of chance, etc. current and up to date.
  8. Support Caucus co-chairs with fiscal reports and systems.
  9. Runs and reviews reports to ensure accuracy of general ledger accounting system.
  10. Performs duties and tasks in accordance with GAAP and the organization’s fiscal policies and procedures.
  11. All other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or some combination of equivalent accounting experience/coursework. Preferably some experience with a not-for-profit entity with a fund accounting system.  Experience with computer systems and data entry.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously in person and on the telephone.
  3. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence is required

COMPUTER SKILLS

The following computer skills are required for this position:

  1. Experience with personal computers, preferably a MAC.
  2. Hands-on experience with accounting software packages (preferably fund accounting) and must be willing to learn new software applications as needed.
  3. Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel including using various functions. Must be able to design effective and efficient Excel workbooks that include footing and cross-footing calculations, linking various Excel workbooks, and creating formulas.
  4. Proficiency using Microsoft Word including mail merge with Excel workbooks and lists.
  5. Experience with databases is preferred.

ACCOUNTING AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  1. Must be able to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  2. Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (including accrual accounting).
  3. Strong mathematical and analytical skills.

SALARY

The pay for this job is up to $35 per hour.
