Executive Director Position Summary
Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Harrisburg, PA
The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) www.pcadv.org is seeking a new Executive Director with visionary leadership, a deep passion for women’s rights and social change and the capacity to influence change in systems’ responses to domestic violence as well as the public’s beliefs about domestic violence. This dedicated and compassionate professional will bring a wealth of experience to an established and respected organization.
The Mission of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence is to eliminate personal and institutional violence against women through programs providing support and safety to battered women, direct services, public information and education, systems advocacy and social change activities. The members of the PCADV work toward this goal through supportive, cooperative practices in all aspects of our individual programs and collective efforts.
The new Executive Director will succeed Susan Kelly-Dreiss, the founding Executive Director of PCADV, who is retiring in 2008. For over 30 years, Susan’s vision has enabled this private nonprofit organization to grow and thrive, starting with nine domestic violence programs in the state to the current number of 61. The statewide network of community-based domestic violence programs offers a lifeline to safety for victims in every county of the Commonwealth without regard to age, sex, race, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation/identity, or economic status.
PCADV is recognized as both a state and national leader in the movement to end violence against women and children.
Organization Background and Accomplishments
PCADV was established in 1976 when a handful of grassroots community groups in the state joined together to lobby for legal protections and to create services for victims of domestic violence. Discovering they shared a profound understanding that the struggle of battered women is the struggle for the rights of all women, these advocates unified their efforts and built a network of services for victims that would eventually extend to all corners of the Commonwealth. Their collective work provided the foundation for the establishment of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the first state domestic violence coalition in the country.
The Coalition is a statewide membership organization with a Board of Directors of 65 delegates. A total of 56 staff are employed at the Coalition’s office in Harrisburg, PA. Since 1980, PCADV has administered a statewide contract for domestic violence services through the Commonwealth of PA, and is currently responsible for the distribution of $22 million dollars. As the statewide administrator, the PCADV develops program standards and monitors for compliance. A strong emphasis is placed on program development, technical assistance and training support for advocates.
PCADV effectively develops and advocates a state level policy agenda, promoting safety and justice for victims of domestic violence through legislation and public policymaking. A “Publications Team” coordinates information and resource development that provides materials and products for public education, training, distribution to the media and utilization by local domestic violence programs in their community education efforts.
In 1993, PCADV secured federal funds to develop and operate the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV). The NRCDV provides a wide range of free, comprehensive, and individualized technical assistance and training on domestic violence policy, practice and research, along with specialized resource materials, for state domestic violence coalitions, local advocacy programs, public and private agencies, educators and policymakers. This national level work enhances PCADV’s work to improve societal and community responses to domestic violence and, ultimately, prevent its occurrence.
PCADV operates numerous state level projects, funded by state and federal grants and private foundations. Specific projects currently include:
The organization’s annual operating budget is $6.8 million dollars. Along with the Executive Director there are eight seasoned managers who comprise the organization’s management team.
