Offering victims the opportunity to have choices in their lives and supporting those choices is significant. Often times, victims feel the only choice is to stay in the situation that - even though it is not safe - they at least know what to expect. I´ve seen great strides in our program and in the movement. For close to 15 years, Joyce Nicely has been on the “front lines” everyday helping battered women secure the basic necessities of life. She knows firsthand the wide array of obstacles battered women face and the triumphs they can achieve. She connects them with resources, and helps them to strive for their goals. She shows empathy and compassion for the women she counsels as they work through their own healing. This is evident in her rapport with the diverse individuals that stay in our shelter, as well as in her support groups for incarcerated women and women coping with addictions. As each woman is empowered, she is better able to make healthy choices for herself. In this way, Joyce is making a difference one person at a time. | A Tribute to 30 Remarkable WomenIn Celebration of 30 Remarkable Years Working to End Domestic Violence, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence Pays Tribute to 30 Remarkable Women Making Domestic Violence History.
